There is certainly a significant element of racism (or whatever we’re calling religious bias these days) in that Swiss vote; but that does not negate the fact that continued encouragement of immigration of Muslims who have no intention of assimilating into the existing culture of Europe (and the U.S.) is madness since it will almost inevitably lead to a murderous clash.
That it was the usually quiet, low-profile, un-newsworthy, politically boring,
neutral Swiss who suddenly roared their fears about Islam only enhances their
votes’ impact.
Hopefully it’s not too late for a line to be drawn without widespread bloodshed.

The Swiss are doing this because it's safe. They can do this and know that NATO and the United States are out actively fighting the threat and will protect them from their bigotry.
Plus, the majority of Switzerland's Muslim population is from the former Yugoslavia, and Bosnians and Kosovar Albanians aren't known as very good Muslims outside of Croatian and Serbian ultra-nationalist delusions.
So, for the Swiss, it's a cost-free sop to their prejudice. If the paranoid fears of an Islamic Europe were to come true, the Swiss would quietly repeal this ban.
I'm not sure I buy your assertion that the Swiss will quietly repeal the ban if Europe goes Islamic. On the evidence of several hundred years they seem more likely to retreat into isolation from the rest of Europe and rely on their fortifications in the mountain passes to keep them safe.
I thought I made myself fairly clear by the way that I see the ban as a sop to their prejudice; but I think it important because it represents a clear majority of Swiss voicing their opposition to continued immigration by Muslims not intent on assimilating in a relatively mild way.
History punk is right, though one must still watch out !
This question appears on swiss board, because as a tiny country, they still can have a direct democracy, where essential decisions are discussed by the mobs instead of "elites" by us.
Though it's the far-rightist party that urged this topic.
as it's bizarre, by us, it's what is left of communists that raised the question of burka
